Now Hiring: Apprentice Lineman
Location: Glidden, Iowa | Status: Full-Time
Raccoon Valley Electric Cooperative is seeking an apprentice lineman to construct, replace, and maintain electric distribution and transmission lines, structures, and equipment.
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Diploma from an accredited line school or equivalent training.
Essential Functions:
- Installs and connects transformers and meters.
- Assist in service restoral at members’ premises during working hours, and as necessary, during off-duty hours.
- Perform line maintenance, as necessary, to ensure the highest levels of continuity of service.
- Perform emergency work, as necessary, to restore the Cooperative’s primary electrical system to full operational capability.
- Perform all aspects of line work dealing with underground and overhead distribution and substation equipment.
- Install street lighting and use associated equipment.
- Comply with all of the Cooperative’s safety rules and use safe working practices and methods, and look out for the safety of others.
- Acquire a thorough working knowledge of first aid and pole-top rescue.
- Comply with all traffic laws, rules, and regulations while operating a Cooperative vehicle while practicing proper traffic procedures.
- Acquire and/or maintain a working knowledge of all substation switching operations, system apparatus, or devices.
- Maintain a working knowledge of Cooperative and RUS specifications, the National Electric Safety Code and mapping system and staking sheets.
- Prepare appropriate records such as material tickets, charge outs, timesheets, and other reports as necessary.
- Maintain a working knowledge of the Cooperative and the department policies and procedures.
- Attend applicable safety meetings and other special training sessions when requested.
- Comply with the proper operating practices in the use of the two-way radio.
- Assist in on-the-job training as necessary.
- Operate and ensure that cooperative tools, equipment, and materials are properly maintained and stored securely.
- Report all property damages.
- Recommend to the supervisor where improvements can be made in operations, practices, procedures, and methods.
- Promote and present a positive professional image when performing his/her duties.
- Performs other duties as necessary or required.
Job Requirements:
- Must be able to climb poles, operate line trucks, trenchers, and/or other underground equipment.
- Must be able to pass any required drug tests and new hire physical examination.
- Must be able to work in overtime/on-call situations.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Must be able to follow directions and prioritize job tasks.
- Must be able to work as a team or individually.
- Must be able to work safely around machinery.
- Measure, cut, or otherwise work on materials or objects with great precision.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts and apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- Skillfully use hand tools, power tools, or machines needed for tasks.
- Attend seminars, safety meetings, and Members’ Annual Meeting as requested or assigned.
- Valid first aid and CPR cards required.
- Valid Class A Iowa Commercial Driver’s License or acquire one within three (3) months from hire date.
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 lbs.
- Possible frequent after-hour service calls to restore power outages and problems. Possibility of working continuous and lengthy hours with minimal rest.
- Position activities require reaching, standing, sitting, crawling, climbing, bending, kneeling, lifting, and good finger dexterity.
- Frequently climb poles and are at elevations, working in awkward positions.
- May be required to walk in uneven or poor terrain during poor weather conditions.
